Iron Senergy is excited to share that Bluefield State University has reinstated its prestigious Mining Engineering Technology program, after a decade-long pause. The program’s return is timely, addressing the growing demand for skilled professionals in the mining industry.
According to Dr. Darrin Martin, Interim President of Bluefield State University, “We are thrilled to reintroduce the Mining Engineering Technology program at Bluefield State. This program has long been a cornerstone of our engineering offerings, and its revival is a testament to our dedication to fostering economic growth and providing valuable educational opportunities in our region” (Olsen).
The revival of the program originated from discussions between Bluefield State Board of Governors member Shannon Remines and Mike Blackburn of Pocahontas Royalties, LLC. During their conversation about the industry’s growing need for trained engineers, the pair decided to lead the effort to bring back the program (Olsen).
Approved by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission in the spring of 2024, the program has already seen a strong response from high school and vocational students. Coal companies, manufacturers, foundations, and individuals have provided financial support, scholarships, lab space, and internships, ensuring that students are equipped with real-world experience. “It’s important that our students enter the workforce with real-world experience beyond the classroom,” said Bill Bennett, Dean of the School of STEM at Bluefield State (Olsen).
This four-year program will culminate in a Bachelor of Science degree, preparing graduates with essential skills such as mine ventilation, safety management, and mineral processing. According to Keith Olson, Bluefield State’s Vice President of Development, “There are 14 accredited mining and mineral engineering degree programs across the country producing approximately 150 graduates, while there is an industry need for over 500 engineers each year” (Olsen). With a significant portion of the current geoscience workforce set to retire by 2029, the program’s revival couldn’t come at a better time.
Iron Senergy is thrilled to support the next generation of mining professionals and looks forward to seeing the impact of the Mining Engineering Technology program on both students and the mining industry.
For more information on the program, visit Bluefield State’s Mining Engineering Technology page.

Iron Senergy recently had the privilege of partnering with the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Pennsylvania Trapper’s Association to host a 3-day trapping training event. This collaboration brought together a diverse group of participants eager to expand their knowledge and skills in trapping, an essential practice for wildlife management and conservation.
The event was a resounding success, with 17 students in attendance, including three from the Iron Senergy team and the rest from various locations across Pennsylvania. Held over the course of three days, the training provided participants with hands-on experience, expert guidance, and valuable insights into the techniques and best practices of trapping.
The partnership between Iron Senergy, the PA Game Commission, and the Pennsylvania Trapper’s Association underscores our commitment to supporting education and professional development in our community. By facilitating this training, we aimed to contribute to the responsible management of our natural resources and strengthen the skills of those dedicated to preserving Pennsylvania’s wildlife.
We are proud to have been part of this event and extend our gratitude to the PA Game Commission, the Pennsylvania Trapper’s Association, and all the participants who made this training a success. This collaboration reflects Iron Senergy’s ongoing dedication to community engagement and environmental stewardship.

The WVU Medicine Children’s Gala commemorated its 20th anniversary at the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place on Saturday, February 10, with the presentation of the 2024 Community Service Award to Iron Senergy CEO/Owner, Justin Thompson.
As Thompson received the award, a video showcased individuals personally touched by his generosity, including Michelle James, a patient recently diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Michelle had the opportunity to attend concerts by Taylor Swift and Mariah Carey, courtesy of Iron Senergy. Reflecting on these experiences, Michelle shared, “It gave me something to look forward to in such a hard time, just getting to scream my favorite songs at the top of my lungs. It was an amazing little break from reality.” You can hear more of Michelle’s story, as well as that of Iron Senergy Plant Manager, Eric Gribble, who also benefited from Thompson’s kindness in the award video below.
Thompson’s dedication to philanthropy has left a permanent mark on countless lives. One notable initiative is his donation of $1 million to support the Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the new WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital. In honor of his donation Amy L. Bush, B.S.N., M.B.A., R.N., C.N.O.R., chief operating officer for WVU Medicine Children’s, said, “The Thompson family’s gift will help us build a top-notch facility and attract world-class neonatal experts to ensure that West Virginia families never have to leave the state for the care they need.”
The gala raised an astounding $1.45 million to support West Virginia children and their families, with over 1,200 attendees enjoying an elegant affair featuring a cocktail reception, silent auction, live entertainment, dinner, and more, all under the theme of “City of Lights.” A total of 90 sponsors contributed to the fundraising total, including top-level sponsors Iron Senergy, the Hayhurst Family, United Sound, Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place, CJL Engineering and HED Design, Friends of WVU Hospitals, Panhandle Cleaning and Restoration, Duke’s Mayo, Daniel’s Men’s Store, and WVU Medicine Garrett Regional Medical Center and Potomac Valley Hospital.
Through initiatives like these, Iron Senergy continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting our community and helping those in need. By using the strength of kindness and working together we believe we can create a brighter, more hopeful future for all.
In a recent demonstration of our commitment to community and compassion, Carol Zuchowski, our dedicated Human Resources Generalist at Iron Senergy, took the lead in our latest Iron Impact initiative. Carol, a veteran herself, chose to direct our efforts towards PA Vet Pets, making a substantial $6,760 donation on behalf of our organization.
This decision was not merely about financial contribution; it was a sincere and personal choice deeply rooted in connection and understanding. Carol shares, “Being a veteran, I wholeheartedly chose this charity because of it. Dealing with PTSD, I had a friend in the service who tragically took their own life. There was a desperate attempt to seek help, but the system seemed too busy to respond. Witnessing Omar and Vet Pets extending a helping hand to anyone in need, it became paramount for me to choose them when given the opportunity by the company owner.”
To raise funds for this impactful initiative, Iron Senergy organized a 50/50 drawing exclusively for our employees. Through their generous contributions, we not only met but exceeded our fundraising goal, allowing us to make a significant impact on the lives of veterans in need.
VetPets of Southwestern Pennsylvania, a veteran-operated nonprofit, is dedicated to providing therapy dogs and service dogs to veterans and first responders facing challenges. Their firm belief in the transformative power of the human-animal bond drives their mission to reduce the rate of suicide and enhance communication for those silently grappling with the invisible wounds of war and workplace trauma.
This donation from Iron Senergy serves as a testament to our commitment to making a positive impact in areas that matter. We commend Carol Zuchowski for her thoughtful selection, embodying the values that define Iron Senergy – empathy, community support, and a dedication to making a difference.

In the spirit of giving, Iron Senergy, under the leadership of CEO and Owner Justin Thompson, has made a significant impact by enabling a heartwarming initiative. Recently, Thompson spoke about Iron Senergy’s contribution, which allowed WVU Medicine to send patients to Mariah Carey’s “Merry Christmas One and All” concert at PPG Paints Arena on December 5th. This gesture not only showcases the company’s commitment to the community but also highlights the profound impact of generosity on those in need.
Among the individuals who benefited from this opportunity is Michelle James, a patient with a touching story to share. Michelle revealed, “This year, I was diagnosed with another form of leukemia, and it was going well for a little bit. We decided it was time for a bone marrow transplant. We thought I wouldn’t be home for Christmas, but thanks to this event, I get to celebrate Christmas with my mom before IV chemo starts again in the new year. I’m grateful for these precious moments!”
Michelle’s story epitomizes the power of generosity in bringing joy and hope to those facing challenging circumstances. Despite undergoing intensive medical treatment, the opportunity to attend Mariah Carey’s concert provided her with a much-needed respite and the chance to create cherished memories with her loved ones during the holiday season.
Iron Senergy’s support not only facilitated James’s attendance at the concert but also symbolizes the company’s dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of individuals within the community. By partnering with WVU Medicine Children’s, Iron Senergy exemplifies the importance of corporate social responsibility and the profound impact it can have on enhancing the well-being of others.
As we reflect on this heartwarming story, let us celebrate the power of generosity and the joy it brings to those who need it most. Iron Senergy’s contribution serves as a reminder that even small acts of kindness can have a ripple effect, spreading happiness and hope to those facing adversity.
Iron Senergy has made a significant donation of $65,000 to guarantee that all local children can partake in Greene County’s summer day camps and swimming pools, regardless of financial constraints. This act of philanthropy underscores Iron Senergy’s commitment to serving the community and supporting programs that contribute to a stronger Greene County.
CEO Justin Thompson expressed his pride in providing the essential funding to the Parks and Recreation department, enabling children from all corners of the county to enjoy these valuable programs free of charge. Iron Senergy recognizes the importance of investing in the future of the community and aims to ensure that every child can participate in enriching summer activities.
The county’s summer day camps were held at three locations: Lions Club Park in Waynesburg, Wana B Park in Carmichaels, and Mon View Park in Greensboro. These camps offer more than just traditional recreational activities; local groups have joined forces to provide a diverse range of educational experiences, enhancing the children’s knowledge and skills during their summer break.
One remarkable aspect of the summer program is that admission to the respective pools at each camp is included. This allows the children to cool off and enjoy refreshing aquatic adventures, further enriching their summer experiences.
Bret Moore, the Director of Greene County Recreation, expressed his gratitude to Iron Senergy, highlighting the long-standing support the company has provided. “This marks the third consecutive year that Iron Senergy has generously funded the day camps, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to the children of Greene County. Additionally, the company has contributed to the repair and maintenance of equipment, ensuring the smooth operation of the pools. Their partnership has also resulted in the construction of a new pavilion at the Water Park and the sponsorship of the annual Kids’ Fall Fishing Frenzy event.”
Commissioner Betsy McClure commended Iron Senergy for their multi-faceted contributions to Greene County. “Not only does the company provide sustainable jobs for local families, but they also play a vital role in supporting the community as a whole.” The commissioner also expressed heartfelt gratitude for Iron Senergy’s continuous support, acknowledging the positive impact it has on the entire county. Greene County recognizes Iron Senergy as a valuable partner, creating opportunities for children to learn, grow, and create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
